After a while, I started seeing patterns for what I like and what I despise.

Like: websites with minimal advertising
Despise: sites with more advertising than content
The text has been copied below, and slightly edited.

Creative Block

It's been a few years since I left the fold. To be honest, I don't like thinking about my church days, even though I spent over thirty years in that horrid condition. Maybe by sharing my story, I can repay all those before me who left their record, but alas, I don't know reformed Egyptian so I'm stuck with English. During my transition year, I devoured all the exit stories/videos that I could find. It was the most refreshing experience and exactly what I needed, so like I said, this is payback. As a summary, my wife and kids have all successfully deprogrammed themselves and we exist in the real world of psychological freedom, so there's a happy ending for all those like myself, who hate sad endings or 100% sad endings.
As a brief introduction, I was the golden child, 2nd of 12 kids from Sandy Utah. The first to go on a mission, the one my parents always knew would be a good example to my siblings. I suppose they were right, but not in the way they assumed. Hopefully, the rest of my family will follow my example and find the happiness and relief that I have found. Like many people say, the best thing to happen to me was to find my wife. She never was a true believer, thank god (little g). I shudder at the thought of her being a molly mormon. Then I probably never would have taken the first step on the path to freedom. It really is a nightmare to think of myself still a member, wasting more of my time and money.
My deconversion experience is similar to others. I took the first step by considering the possibility that christianity (little c) was all BS. After taking that leap of faith, everything else just fell into place. I suppose my experience came in a little bit different order. Here's what I discovered, in chronological order: There was no Jesus, the Book of Mormon was not translated from ancient writings. Joseph Smith was a conman.
Since I lived so far away from any family members, leaving the church was easy. I feel really sorry for people who want to leave but live in Mormon strongholds. All I did was just delay telling my family. After a few years though, I got tired of lying to my parents every time we talked on the phone, and I had to tell them how my calling was going and what my wife was doing and my kids. Finally, in February 2014, I wrote a letter to my parents and then a blog post and posted it on Facebook. See the link below:

http://theheadrobot.blogspot.com/2014/02/outside-box.html

There were some rough seas for a couple weeks following my announcement, but the waters finally calmed and we achieved a new steady-state where everyone spoke to me as if I was still a member, but never asked me any questions. I suppose they were afraid I would start an argument with them, which I probably would have. Life's been a big juicy peach since then.
Now for the reason why I named my escape story, "Creative Block". So, I've always liked to write stories. I had finished a few short stories and started several novels which are what I really wanted to write. No matter how much work and effort I put into planning a novel however, I always ran into some mysterious creative block. I just lost interest in every story I started to write. Many of them were either science fiction or fantasy, but even if they were just a novel set in the traditional real world, I never felt like they were what I wanted. They felt empty, devoid of meaning.
Here's a couple theories. First, I think the church sucks all the mystery from life. I like reading books and watching movies where there's something to discover or some form of mystery. In the church on the other hand, eternity is all laid out for us. We know our origination and our destination. It all sounds kind of boring, even if we end up owning a planet of gold and have millions of beautiful wives who never age (wait a second, maybe I haven't thought this through completely).
My second theory which can probably be included with my first theory, is that religion dumbs down life so completely, that trying to make it complicated is possibly going against the rules. There's only two sources of motivation god (little g) or satan (little s). Real life in contrast is complicated and even people themselves aren't even sure what their motivations are, and usually, they are a mixture of good and bad.
So, the good news to me is that once I left religion, my writing motivation just fell into place. I found a theme that I believe in and made it into a novel, published this month called "Silent Subversion I" (shameless plug), available on Amazon. I put some mormon (little m) references into it, but the story really doesn't have anything to do with religion, I just couldn't help make some of the characters have negative feelings about religion and mormanity in particular.

As most of the people who have left religion can attest, Mormonism and religion in general have some nasty side effects, worse than any medication in my opinion. How many times do we here church members talk about the blessings of the gospel and yet we cannot think of one real blessing except for promises of future blessings. All I received from Mormonism was low self-esteem, a distorted view of life, 10-15% less income, 30-50% less time, self-doubt, a false sense of superiority to inferior non-members, constant feeling of not doing enough or being good enough...I could go on for several more lines. On the bright side, all the negative from religion can all be erased pretty quickly once the cure is embraced. Leave the fire and cool off!
One of the most memorable activities was just swimming in the Columbia. We went almost every week. The sandbar was the best place to go. Carrie took the perfect picture, including our nephew Dakota.
Each child had a good experience and hopefully know more about the world.

And the next day.
Supposedly, it is to scale. I was impressed with how large the original must have been. Anyway, we played hide and seek there.

That's probably why they built it, for hide and seek.
It was about a 2.5 mile hike and I had my doubts that we would make it. We started with Simon and Monika Spykerman who walked the 1st mile with us.

After we separated from the Spykerman's, Parker and Elise were fine for the next 0.5 miles then the last mile, Parker cried almost the whole way and Elise was not happy about how hard it was and how much her ankle hurt. I wore a heavy backpack with the tent and all our food and other supplies. The kids only had backpacks with sleeping bags and a water bottle, but I had to alternately help carry their packs.
Parker was almost hysterical and complained about everything. I hate the forest, I hate this trail, you're so mean for making us come on this hike. You never said we had to hike. I hate this tree, this rock...

Twenty minutes before arriving, they couldn't take it anymore.

When we finally found a campsite at the lake, the kids instantly recovered and helped setup and make a fire. They loved the fire and both got poker sticks to play with. They lit them on fire and waved them around in the air. I had to tell them a million times not to through flaming sparks through the air and hit people.

We ate tinfoil dinners and then roasted a whole bag of marshmallows. I spent a lot of time getting firewood to feed the fire. They loved the tinfoil dinners (steak, potatoes, carrots) and of course the marshmallows. When it got dark, I stayed outside the tent and watched for people. We were alone, but saw a light that could have been close, but also far. We never heard or saw anyone after dark and only 1 lone woman hiker right after arriving. The lake was pretty and very small, located at the bottom of a deep bowl and a single stream running into it. I forgot the fishing pole, but it worked better without it.
That was the longest night of the last couple years. I turned over every thirty minutes or so and stayed awake until 04:30 then slept until 06:00, then got up and built the fire. I boiled some water and we had oatmeal.

After getting ready to hike out, they found leaves they wanted to wear for hats. Elise's lasted for about five minutes, but Parker kept his for about thirty minutes. I neglected to tell them how ridiculous they looked.

On the way back, the kids and I were extremely tired, but did not cry or complain...Success!

After getting back, we went to IKEA and had hot dogs then to Jamba Juice for fruit smoothies. I hope Parker and Elise are tougher now after their hard experience on the trail. It was so weird camping all alone with two small children and no other human around for miles. Every noise at night and imagined noise scared me. I've seen too many zombie movies lately. Next time I'm taking another adult.Head Robothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09040462687588141210noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6699910164961004915.post-48945995088052433152014-03-02T12:33:00.001-08:002014-03-04T06:42:46.715-08:00Say hi to Gate6My kids reluctantly agreed to ride their bikes with me to one of my favorite places, Gate6.
When we finally arrived, the rain began to fall, so the kids felt anxious to start the bike ride back.

On the way back, we had to stop so that Parker could ride down this hill. We would never consider walking down to that barn to see the awesome barn owl 'who' resides there.
It would be crazy and stupid to even consider the exit, especially when that exit meant eternal death and immediate misery. At least, that was the threat...

Then why did I leave the religion box? I finally decided to give credibility to my many doubts and questions. After a thorough investigation I found myself in a totally unfamiliar world.

I did not belong to a special group of people destined to rise above all others

All people were in the same basic situation

Important questions about life had many possible answers, but no definite ones

The source of evil and despair came from other humans, not from ghosts or fallen angels

The beauty of life and the world outside the box exceeded the quality of life inside the box

When seen from different angles and in natural light, the pictures on the box walls could be easily recognized as artificial and all my doubts and concerns about the reality of the box suddenly became validated. With a little courage, I considered more reasonable explanations for all my disturbing questions.

Concerning Christianity and religion in general, I always disregarded the following questions:

if god uses feelings to confirm truth, why do so many people seem to get the same answer as their parents?

why does religion teach people to have more faith in other people than in themselves?

why is god such a collectivist?

why do the methods of brainwashing and mind-control have so much in common with how religion teaches children and people?

why was god's solution to problems involve killing large groups of people?

why did god command the ancient Israelites to kill all the men, women and children of certain lands?

why does god protect little children who pray or who are prayed for, more than children who don't pray and who don't have people praying for them?

why did people after Jesus get to live the higher law? Why did Pork suddenly become acceptable to eat?

why did Jesus walk on water?

why is there no reference to the birth of Jesus in the old testament, except for a misinterpreted reference taken out of context in Isaiah?

why did Jesus believe mental disorders to be caused by evil spirits?

if there was a god and he knew everything and had all power, why did he do so many stupid and contradictory actions, as described in the Bible?

why did Jesus appear to be in support of Cesar?

why did the god's chosen people, the ancient Israelites, treat women and others so horribly

why did god seem to approve of slavery?

Concerning Mormanity, I always disregarded the following questions:

why could Joseph Smith translate the golden plates without even having them within eyesight?

why did Joseph Smith put his face in a hat to translate the Book of Mormon?

why would Nephi create a new written language to write his history?

why does the Book of Mormon have so many significant changes to the inspired translation?

why did Joseph Smith write significantly different versions of the first vision?

why did Joseph Smith marry very young girls and other men's wives?

why are the temple ceremonies copied from the masons and then significantly changed since Joseph Smith first introduced them?

why did the lost manuscript fiasco make Joseph Smith and Jesus appear so powerless and timid?

why did the civil rights movement and the blacks obtaining the priesthood happen suspiciously close to each other? how could god be such a racist?

why did the Book of Mormon contain the same mistakes the bible translators made?

why did an Angel have to take the Golden Plates back to heaven and why would Moroni have to bury them if an Angel could just keep them safe?

why does the church disregard most of the Word of Wisdom?

if the Book of Mormon explicitly condemns nations being the aggressor in armed conflict, why does the church show no objection to any modern aggressive action?

why did god command the church to abandon polygamy instead of making a way for his people to obey his commandments?

how could communism be the highest and most noble state of society?

why do modern prophets act so timidly and politically correct when being interviewed by secular news sources?

why did Joseph Smith make so many inaccurate predictions?

why did Jesus command Joseph Smith to create a bank based on fiat and fraud?

why did the leaders of the Mormon church act completely opposite as the book of mormon leaders?

why does the church endorse misleading reasons for persecution of the early members?

since all the precious truths had been lost from the Bible, why did the Joseph Smith translation contain no new or important information?

how could non-member historians who studied Mormanity, not believe in Joseph Smith?

why do ancient prophets in the Book of Mormon use the word 'Christ' as if it was a last name?

why would I get so annoyed by the special attire in the temple?

To be included in my 'sacred' list, they must evoke an intense emotional and personal response. A brief description of how their effect on me will be included, eventually. A part of the lyrics, if any might also be included.

The songs are in no particular order.

Greenpeace by James

This song has several different characters singing

the Earth lamenting all the horrible things being done with her

a lazy man who doesn't like what is being done to the Earth, but he makes no effort to make it any better

a man who only sees the Earth and how it can profit him.

Gonna test my bombs wherever I want,

Gonna poon the whale

Gonna drain the swamp

It's money to me

Keyboard Milk by Royksopp

Coconut by Fever Ray

The Alcoholic by Royksopp

One of the music video's looked to be set in Norway or Sweden by the seashore. It just made me think of being somewhere far away and looking our across the water and how there was nothing out there beyond the waves. Royksopp performed a longer version on some radio station,

Chains by The Wolfgang Press

Whispering Wind by Moby

Tomorrow by Ladytron

Just wanted to start this, the rest will follow and with more details...

He doesn't talk much so whenever he says anything, we love it. While standing in the doorway, he only said one thing. "Ahh, excuse me guys!"Head Robothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09040462687588141210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6699910164961004915.post-17780883345063693632013-07-30T08:53:00.003-07:002013-07-30T08:53:17.672-07:00Elise finally made her decisionElise did something cute yesterday so while she was within my reach, I gave her a hug. When she stopped squeezing me back she said that she was sorry, but she finally made her decision. "I finally decided that I like Mom more than you. Sorry dad, but I still think you're the best dad in the world."

Then later yesterday afternoon, she took Carrie in her room by herself and gave her the joyous news.Head Robothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09040462687588141210noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6699910164961004915.post-63304605772883141752013-07-30T08:45:00.003-07:002013-07-30T08:45:53.769-07:00Downtown Portland with the Kids

The video is not that impressive, because the good ones are horribly shaky because of my issues. This one shows all my kids, just not Simon and his daughter Annika who accompanied us. Overall, we had a lot of fun on the beach.
On the way, I was of course worried about them falling, but it got worse while thinking about it back at home. I had nightmares of someone falling down the mountain.

The video has a lot of wind noise, sorry.

Enjoy...
